Hands Off the Blue Bic 🖊️
My favorite pen is almost always blue. Every once in a great while, I'll grab a red one, but that's basically my rebellious phase. Most of the time, I want that nice, dependable blue ink. There is just something about a good Bic pen. It writes when you need it to write. It doesn't require a special ceremony. You don't have to shake it seventeen times and scribble on a piece of scrap paper before it decides whether it wants to participate. You pick it up, you write, and it works. That's the kind of relationship I appreciate.
And yet, somehow, pens have become one of those things that I apparently have strong opinions about. I'll happily use a random pen if I have to. I'm not unreasonable. But if I have my favorite blue Bic sitting right there? I'm using my pen. Thank you very much.
I've also noticed that favorite pens have a strange way of becoming communal property. You put your favorite pen on your desk. Someone borrows it. They walk away with it. You never see it again. Was it stolen? Was it accidentally taken home? Did it somehow end up three departments away? Nobody knows. It's the Bermuda Triangle of office supplies.
And don't even get me started on pens that look like they should write beautifully but don't. You know the ones. They're pretty. They feel expensive. They have some fancy little grip on them. And then you put them to paper and...nothing. You scribble. Nothing. You scribble harder. Maybe a tiny line appears. At that point, I don't care how pretty the pen is. We're breaking up. Give me my blue Bic.
I also find it funny that something as simple as a pen can become such a personal preference. Some people swear by gel pens. Some want black ink only. Some people have a drawer full of pens and apparently don't care which one they grab. And then there are people like me who find a pen that works exactly the way they like and think, "Yep. This is my pen."
So now I'm curious. Do you have a favorite pen? Is there a particular brand, color, size, or style that you automatically reach for? Are you loyal to blue ink like I am, or are you a black-ink person? Maybe you have a fancy pen that costs more than I'm comfortable admitting a pen should cost. Or maybe you are one of those people who will grab literally any pen within reach and never think about it again.
I need to know, because apparently having a favorite pen is a thing. And if it is, I want to know whether I'm alone in this little stationery obsession. So tell me: What's your favorite pen? And, more importantly, where do you hide it so nobody steals it? 😂
