It's Not Gossip If You're Just Observing 👀
The moving truck arrives, and suddenly everyone on the block becomes an amateur detective. Curtains move exactly one inch. Porch blinds develop magical viewing holes. Dogs suddenly need seventeen walks that day. We all become wildlife photographers pretending to water flowers while quietly wondering, "How many people actually live there?"
The first few weeks are a fascinating game of observation. Do they wave? Do they mow in straight lines? Are they the kind of people who put their trash can away before noon, or are we looking at a decorative lawn ornament that will remain by the curb until next Thursday?
Then comes the parking habits. Oh, the parking habits. Some people pull into a driveway like they're docking the space shuttle. Others somehow manage to own three vehicles despite only ever seeing one actual human being. One car disappears for three days, another appears from nowhere, and before long you're trying to solve traffic patterns worthy of the Department of Transportation.
Of course, every neighborhood has that one mysterious vehicle. It leaves at random hours, returns at equally random hours, and somehow develops its own personality. Bonus points if it has a dashboard decoration that's become such a permanent resident you start wondering if it pays property taxes.
The lawn is another source of neighborhood entertainment. Some people treat mowing like an Olympic event, complete with perfect stripes and military precision. Others seem to believe grass reaches enlightenment if left completely undisturbed. Somewhere in between is the rest of us, looking out the window every twenty minutes asking, "Is the dew gone yet?"
The funny thing is that, after all the speculation, most new neighbors turn out to be...just people. They go to work. They mow their lawn. They forget to take the trash out. They occasionally leave a porch light on all night. Before long, the mystery fades, and they become another familiar part of the neighborhood scenery.
Until the next house goes up for sale.
Then the curtains mysteriously move one inch again.
